Field Cricket (Gryllus)

Occasional invaders have a very descriptive name and are those insects that live most of the year outside, usually only moving indoors to escape harsh weather or to overwinter. Common species of occasional invaders in our region include centipedes, crickets, scorpions, millipedes, earwigs, ground beetles, box elder bugs (seed bugs), pillbugs, sowbugs, springtails, and fleas.

Outside, many occasional invaders live in the soil under mulch, in gardens, under landscaping ties, in rock piles, and under woodpiles. These insects tend to live in areas close to the exterior of buildings, allowing them to easily move inside through cracks and crevices in the foundation and exterior walls. These pests are usually harmless to people but certainly are an annoyance.

When weather conditions become too hot, dry, wet, or cold, occasional invaders move into our homes. Once inside, they seek out areas that are similar to their dark, damp outdoor environments. You'll find them in basements, crawlspaces, bathrooms, laundry rooms, under sinks, in attics, walls voids, and under floors. As occasional invaders move throughout a home, they can stain upholstered furniture, curtains, and walls with their excrement.

Occasional invader prevention tips: To keep occasional invaders from invading your home, seal any entry points you find in the foundation, exterior walls, and roofline of your house. Place mesh covers over vents leading into your home and put tight-fitting covers on chimneys. Seal up spaces around wires and pipes that enter your home and place weatherstripping around windows, doors, and air-conditioning units.

Impact Pest Management offers thorough pest-proofing and prevention services that disuade occasional pests from infesting your home or business.
